Doctrine & Covenants 87: Prophecy of War and Warning to the Nations (December 25, 1832)
On December 25, 1832, a day traditionally filled with warmth, peace, and joy, the Prophet Joseph Smith received one of the most sobering revelations of his ministry. Known today as Doctrine and Covenants Section 87, this revelation was not a message of seasonal cheer but a solemn prophecy of war, destruction, and global conflict. Given in Kirtland, Ohio, this section is often referred to as “The Prophecy on War” and stands as a powerful witness to Joseph Smith’s divine calling and foresight. At a time when the United States appeared stable and expanding, the Lord declared that trouble would begin in South Carolina and ripple across nations—a prediction fulfilled decades later.
Wars and Rumors of Wars
The revelation opens with a stunning declaration: “Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina.” This specific detail would later prove to be historically accurate when South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union in 1860, igniting the American Civil War. But the Lord’s warning extended far beyond that singular conflict. The section foretells that war would spread to all nations, causing death, destruction, and despair. The prophecy painted a grim picture of human conflict, laying bare the cost of pride, injustice, and rebellion against divine principles.
A Vision of Global Calamity
D&C 87 is not just a military forecast—it is a spiritual call to recognize the consequences of wickedness. The Lord prophesied that famine, plague, and earthquakes would accompany these wars, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. Nations would rise against nations. Hearts would fail. The earth itself would groan under the weight of sin and sorrow. Yet even in the darkness of this imagery, a divine thread of mercy runs through the text. The Lord offers these warnings not to frighten, but to forewarn and prepare His people for the days ahead.
The Role of the Saints
In the midst of coming chaos, the Lord calls upon His covenant people to be different. Rather than be consumed by fear or swept away by political turmoil, the Saints are counseled to “stand in holy places, and be not moved.” The instruction is clear: stay spiritually grounded. Be prepared temporally. Live righteously and keep covenants. If necessary, the Saints are told to flee from dangerous areas—always led by the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The Lord emphasizes that His people can be a light in a dark world, offering peace and hope even as destruction unfolds around them.
Preparation and Peace
Section 87 carries themes that resonate deeply today. Though given nearly two centuries ago, its relevance is striking. We still live in a world rife with conflict, unrest, and natural disasters. The commandment to prepare is not outdated. It remains a living principle of wisdom and protection. Latter-day Saints are invited to store food, seek peace, cultivate faith, and follow modern prophets. The Lord does not abandon His people in times of crisis. Instead, He equips them with knowledge and forewarning so they may endure well.
A Testament to Prophetic Authority
The accuracy and power of D&C 87 have led many to see it as one of the clearest demonstrations of Joseph Smith’s prophetic gift. In 1832, few could have imagined the bloodshed that would engulf the United States. Yet the Lord knew. The revelation’s reference to South Carolina and the cascade of war and judgment that followed lends credence to the idea that God speaks through chosen messengers. This section isn’t merely predictive—it’s prescriptive. It calls for a higher standard of living, of faith, and of action in troubled times.
The Lord’s Hand in History
Doctrine and Covenants 87 reinforces a fundamental truth: God is involved in the affairs of men. He is not distant or indifferent. He sees the movements of nations, the rise and fall of empires, and the personal struggles of every soul. Through prophecy, He urges His children to prepare, to trust in Him, and to understand that no calamity is outside His reach. The Lord allows agency but also invites His people to be a force for peace in an unstable world.
Still Unfolding
While parts of D&C 87 have already come to pass, its full scope continues to unfold. The world remains volatile. The need for holy places, spiritual vigilance, and temporal readiness is as pressing now as it was in 1832. This prophecy stands as a sobering reminder that the Lord will warn before He acts. It also testifies of His mercy—His desire to protect and preserve the faithful. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are invited to heed His warnings, follow His guidance, and be instruments of His peace in a world that desperately needs it.

Doctrine and Covenants 87
Revelation and prophecy on war, given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at or near Kirtland, Ohio, December 25, 1832. At this time disputes in the United States over slavery and South Carolina’s nullification of federal tariffs were prevalent. Joseph Smith’s history states that “appearances of troubles among the nations” were becoming “more visible” to the Prophet “than they had previously been since the Church began her journey out of the wilderness.”
1–4, War is foretold between the Northern States and the Southern States; 5–8, Great calamities will fall upon all the inhabitants of the earth.
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;
2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.
3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.
4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.
5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.
6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;
7 That the cry of the saints, and of the blood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies.
8 Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.
