Doctrine and Covenants 90:2–3 (March 8, 1833)
On March 8, 1833, in Kirtland, Ohio, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation that underscores the solemn stewardship entrusted to the Presidency of the High Priesthood. In verses 2 and 3 of Section 90, the Lord pronounces a double blessing: first, upon those who bear the sacred keys of the kingdom, and second, upon the enduring nature of that trust. This divine charge not only affirms the authority of the leaders but also points forward to the unfolding of God’s final dispensation upon the earth.
The Blessing of the Keys
In ancient times, keys symbolized authority, access, and stewardship. Here, the Lord declares, “thou art blessed from henceforth that bear the keys of the kingdom given unto you.” This blessing conveys both honor and responsibility: those who hold the keys are empowered to unlock heavenly ordinances, govern sacred affairs, and guide the Church in the “last time” of earth’s history. By bestowing this privilege, the Lord aligns His servants with His divine will, commissioning them to direct the ongoing work of salvation and revelatory governance in preparation for Christ’s millennial reign.
An Everlasting Mandate
Following the blessing, the Lord adds a promise that deepens its significance: “the keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you, while thou art in the world, neither in the world to come.” Unlike temporal powers that may lapse or be revoked, this heavenly authority is perpetual. It binds the custodians of the keys to an unbroken covenant that spans mortality and eternity. Such an assurance reinforces the stability and continuity of divine order, reassuring Church members that God’s priesthood will never falter or be withdrawn from His chosen stewards.
The Kingdom Coming Forth
By linking the blessing of the keys to the phrase “which kingdom is coming forth for the last time,” the revelation situates the Church within a grand eschatological framework. This dispensation inaugurates the final phase of the Lord’s work on earth—an era marked by restoration, gathering, and preparation for the Second Coming. As the keys unlock ordinances and direct Church administration, they also open the way for every soul to participate in the culminating chapters of God’s redemptive plan.
In embracing these sacred keys, Church leaders and members alike commit to a shared mission: to sustain the kingdom, uphold divine principles, and hasten the establishment of Zion. The promise that these keys will remain, both now and in the world to come, anchors this endeavor in eternal security, inviting all believers to unite under the unfailing authority of heaven.
